LHiNC EcoParents Program"Treat the Earth well, for you did not inherit it from your parents. It is on loan to you from your children.” – Ancient Proverb The Environment Committee of Linden Hills Neighborhood Council (LHiNC) has received a grant from Hennepin County’s Community POWER (Partners on Waste Education and Reduction) program to establish a neighborhood-based “EcoParent” group. The grant has been generously matched by the Hendry Family Foundation, longtime supporters of environmental initiatives in Linden Hills, with additional financial support from the LHiNC Environment Committee. Coming Soon: Sign-Up Form The EcoParent group will be a small neighborhood-based group to learn in-depth about waste and toxicity reduction in an intimate, substantive, and ongoing manner. Each meeting, held approximately monthly, will consist of in-depth education about a specific issue (e.g., improving recycling, non-toxic cleaners, household hazardous waste, green gifts, etc…), followed by a range of specific action steps that can be implemented at the household level. Examples of specific topics the first year likely will include: Towards the end of the initial year of EcoParents, a portion of participants will volunteer to each host a small gathering in their home, demonstrating how to hold a ‘green’ party, as well as to introduce friends to the lessons learned through participation in EcoParents. Additionally, EcoParent members will be encouraged to participate in their block parties on National Night Out 2009 both to demonstrate waste reduction activities as well as to inform their neighbors about waste and toxicity reduction actions. We aim to create a non-judgmental group of neighbors to learn together about issues that impact our homes and our families, as well as specific ways that we can support and encourage each other to take action. At this point, we plan not to affiliate with any existing organizations with similar missions, but rather to pull together ‘best practices’ from a variety of existing organizations and previous projects, as well as consult with our participants to establish structure and practices that will be most successful in our community. The primary focus will be parents, but we are open to the participation of non-parents as well. Priority will be given to Linden Hills residents, but non-residents are encouraged to join, as well. At this time EcoParents will be limited to 40 participants. The first kick off meeting is Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 6:30-8:30pm @ Linden Hills Park. All participants will receive a free reusable canvas shopping bag at this kick-off event! If you are interested in joining EcoParents and/or want to be included on notifications about EcoParents, please complete the following form (coming soon). Thanks! If you have any questions, ideas, suggestions, comments, etc…, please feel free to contact Keiko Veasey, EcoParent Project Manager (volunteer), at ecoparents@lindenhills.org .
